The inside of the boxes are stained with the outside painted in your choice of colors.

If you are ordering them in a color other than black they will have black underneath the topcoat. They have been distressed for more of a primitive appearance. Nice accent for your country primitive home decor.
Decorating Tip: When I use boxes for my own decorating I sometimes add a 1.5"-2" block of wood or turn a bowl upside down to give my candles a little more height in the arrangement.
